When Someone Else Is Living Your Dream; How to Deal With It

Updated: Jun 29, 2023

Let’s face it; we’ve all been there.

Looking at someone in the exact situation you have been longing to be in can be heartbreaking. It can leave you feeling hopeless, discontent, and even envious. Watching someone else live your dream is quite a common situation and an age-old problem.

So how do you deal with it?

Of course, you don’t want to wish bad for others, feel jealous, or be ungrateful. Doing so can be destructive and unhelpful to our mental health. Instead, you need to positively deal with it by changing your mindset. We’ll talk all about it in this article.

Why Them and Not Me?

This is a common question that may arise in your head when a social media update of someone you know living your dream pops up. You ask yourself or a higher power, why is that person living your dream? It will make you feel gutted, bitter, and jealous. Trust us; this is a dark hole you don’t want to spiral into because it leads to numerous negative consequences like feeling bitter all the time, being ungrateful to God for what you have, inability to worship God, and turning a blind eye to the many blessings and gifts we already have in our lives.

Fight Back the Negativity

When such questions appear in your head, address them immediately to avoid these consequences. Nip it in the bud right away before it starts planting roots in your mind and heart. It can be tempting to harbor bitterness for others, life, and God. However, these feelings breed negativity, so you won’t ever be able to achieve your dreams. So, what do you do when you see someone living your dream? You praise God and pray to Him to allow you to see the same happiness. Don’t forget to count your blessings and be grateful for all He has already provided you, for He can take it back in a split second. Replace negativity with positivity.

There Is No Easy Fix

We hate to tell you that there is no easy fix to the feelings you experience when you watch someone in the exact situation you dream of being in. It’s gut-wrenching and leaves you with tears and fresh wounds. But the way forward should be to acknowledge your feelings. If you’re envious and jealous, accept it, then work towards removing those feelings. Always remember that the person who is living your dreams may also have struggles you have no clue about- the grass is not always greener on the other side. So, celebrate their happiness and be part of it. Be positive – or at least fake it when you can’t. Lastly, create an actionable plan to achieve your dream. Find a way to live that same dream. Stop waiting or hoping for it; instead, put in the work. And when all else fails, find a new dream.

Ending Note

Don’t be a prisoner of your mind. Avoid being envious or jealous when watching someone else live your dream, for this breeds ungratefulness to the Lord. Instead, be positive, count your blessings, and focus on achieving your dream. Blaze your own trail!
